Probably one of the coolest things from growing up in Huntsville: Space Camp. If you know anything about the Rocket City, it’s its rich history of STEM and research which is why it’s home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center that hosts Space Camp, different programs designed to educate and immerse individuals on topics such as space exploration, aviation, and robotics. I went to Space Camp when I was 12 years old as a part of my school’s curriculum and I still have the model rocket I made and launched that week. I remember telling everyone after that I wanted to be an astronaut. While that didn’t exactly happen, I remembered Space Camp as an exciting experience that sparked my interest in STEM and encouraged many other kids to pursue these fields.
Not only did I use my own experience as research, but interviewed William Jones, a 15-year-old from Prattville, AL, who had attended Space Camp twice. I had an in-depth conversation about his overall experience and what he found appealing about the program. He states this experience has helped him discover both his hobbies and academic strengths. For example, he stated he learned to build mode rockets and continues to make and launch his own. Throughout this conversation, he emphasized the importance of iconic, familiar imagery to appeal to younger audiences while also incorporating exciting advances in technology.
01: Research
Specifically, advertising programs catered to younger audiences, this poster serves to promote these programs in educational settings and appeal to both adult and child audiences alike. I wanted my solution to excite the audience and spark an interest while maintaining attention. I also found it important to highlight aspects of the actual program, the model rocket, and connect this to a potential future in STEM.
02: Concept
Because this poster is targeting younger audiences, I chose to create familiar, simple vector illustrations. It’s important for the audience to immediately register and compend the imagery and the messaging, so I kept my copy simple, open, and short. I went through many more specific iterations of my call to action but found the final solution “Launch your Curiosity” provided a direct connection to the program and audience while also referencing the program’s features.

and Animation
As a second part of this assignment, we were tasked with creating a 10-second animation using AfterEffects. The animation is avaliable once scanned with the app Artivive as indicted on the poster. I took this as an opportunity to create a transformation from the model rocket to a space shuttle, retaining the embellishments to connect the two and providing the audience with a realistic connection to the curriculum taught at Space Camp and STEM research.
