Album Concept based on Cinema by The Marias
For this concept album, I wanted to create a “stripped” version of the album, Cinema. With this design, I emphasized the casual elements of the behind-the-scenes as well as their Latin influences and roots. The band’s aesthetic consists much of film photography. The title, Cinema (Revelado), references the idea that the band is revealing a different side as well as the revealing of film photography. Referencing film photography connects to the concept of a more raw and genuine representation of the band. Along with film photography, I wanted to use collage to add life and handmade quality to the album, making it personal and conveying the band’s own personal touches.
01: Research
I envisioned this album as a personal experience for the band, and I wanted that to influence my approach. Using sourced and personal imagery, I envisioned the band creating the collage themselves. Using interviews and research, I incorporated elements that were specific and special to the band and the production of the album. I staged photos of the creation of the collage and included these, along with behind-the-scenes photos, as polaroid inserts.
02: Concept
I created a multimedia collage with elements of film photography, photos of the band, and their inspirations. I made all the additional elements with different experimental methods of text and pattern-making, including kissing all over a piece of paper with lipstick. The type and composition of the album reference vintage photo slides while incorporating elements of the band’s branding. This process consisted of lots of scanning, cutting, gluing, printing, and ripping and was done primarily physically, which was my favorite part.
03: Production
For the promotion video, I used two different vintage projectors (a carousel and overhead) to project my images. Taking apart old photo slides, I created my slides with transparency paper but found the quality suffered. After some troubleshooting and a different projector later, I was able to create the vintage, hazy look I wanted and use these larger transparent photos to be revealed building up to the final call to action. This section took a lot of patience and quick troubleshooting. I also had to restructure my original solution I was so set on, which led me to create more effective work in the long run.
